Seekoei Valley Meander
- Introduction
From it's source on the northern slopes of the Compassberg, the highest free-standing peak in
the Cape at 2052m, the Seekoei River meanders down to join South Africa's largest river, the
Gariep, near Colesberg.
Absorb the attractions of the Central Karoo towns of Nieu Bethesda, Hanover and Colesberg.
Take trip on good gravel roads by car, motor-cycle, and mountain bike or even on horseback.
Get an insight into the workings of a Karoo cattle farm. Visit a meerkat family living in
harmony with the farmer near Colesberg, see the only Karoo hippos, close to Hanover, or help
feed a herd of 20 wild horses roaming outside Hanover.
Tackle the Compass Berg, a strenuous climb rewarded by 360' panoramic views, or walk a stone
labyrinth with a view of the setting sun and rising moon. Search for shooting stars in the clear
Karoo night sky, mount a Karoo horse, view unique rock art and ancient Karoo fossils or collect
some “lifers” from the many birds endemic to the Karoo.
Discover secret picnic spots, good wines, fine dining, garden meals, locally brewed beer,
Karoo cheeses, venison and, of course, Karoo Lamb.
